Pole Pole Because Care and Prevention Take Time
Cardiovascular diseases, particularly high blood pressure, are now among the leading causes of disability and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Often silent and underestimated, these conditions progress without clear symptoms until they cause severe complications, compromising quality of life. It is estimated that about 30% of adults in the region suffer from hypertension—one of the highest rates in the world. The consequences are alarming: cardiovascular diseases, often linked to untreated hypertension, have become the leading cause of death on the continent. Stroke, in particular, is among the top three causes of death in 75% of sub-Saharan African countries, with a mortality rate five times higher than in Western nations.
This project aims to promote the prevention, early diagnosis, and management of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases through screening, health education, and direct community involvement. Our commitment is to build a healthier future for those without easy or free access to healthcare.
“Pole pole,” in Swahili, means “slowly, slowly”: a name that reflects our intervention philosophy, based on small, steady, and sustainable steps to improve public health. Through collaboration with local healthcare workers and the active engagement of the community, we aim to increase awareness and access to care, making a lasting impact on quality of life.
