Breast Cancer: Bringing Early Detection Closer to Women
Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women in Tanzania (Mghanga & Seth, 2025).
At Consolata Hospital Ikonda, we regularly care for women who arrive with advanced breast cancer. By the time the disease is diagnosed, it may already have spread beyond the breast, making treatment more complex and less effective. Early detection can make a profound difference, allowing treatment to begin when the disease is more manageable and the chances of recovery are significantly greater.
Led by Dr. Nelice Kitengo, this project aims to make early detection more accessible to the women in our community by identifying the early signs of breast disease and providing timely diagnostic assessment and appropriate treatment.
Our goal is simple: to raise awareness and encourage earlier diagnosis, when treatment is most effective and lives can be saved.
