A Better Space for Patients’ Caregivers
In Tanzania, patients’ meals are traditionally prepared by their families and relatives. For many years, Consolata Hospital Ikonda has provided a dedicated area where caregivers of admitted patients can cook, wash, and rest while staying close to their loved ones. Over time, however, the large number of patients and caregivers placed increasing pressure on the existing facilities.
Known locally as the Makambini Area—from the Swahili word kambi, meaning “camp”—this space provides accommodation and essential facilities for those caring for hospitalized family members.
The Makambini Area expansion was designed to improve their living conditions and create a safer, more comfortable and welcoming environment. The project included the construction of a new women’s dormitory, an expanded kitchen, upgraded sanitary facilities, and the renovation of existing structures.
Thanks to the swift and generous support of our Italian friends from Tanzania nel Cuore, construction began in October 2025 and was completed in June 2026.
The new building was officially opened on 20 June 2026 by Dr. Ligobert Kalisa, District Medical Officer for Makete District, and dedicated to the memory of Carmen Rezzi and Brother Gianfranco Bonaudo IMC.
